Backpackers fined for using Ipswich street as toiletOctober 15, 2008 08:15am TWO backpackers were forced to take a rest stop from their travels round Australia when police caught them using a busy Ipswich street as a toilet. Ipswich Magistrate's Court was told Irishmen James Patrick Heffernan and William Murphy, both 22, were seen urinating in the town's Ellenborough St at about 11pm on September 30.Prosecutor Jo Colston said that when officers challenged them, Murphy replied he was busting to go and could not find a public loo, despite their being numerous pubs and clubs nearby. The mates were charged with being a public nuisance and as a result had to put their travel plans on hold for two weeks until yesterday's court appearance. The red-faced pair pleaded guilty but seemed reluctant to explain why they chose to pee in public. They told acting magistrate Brad Skuse that they were embarrassed by the shameful act and the magistrate asked: "I take it you don't do this sort of thing in your home?" Both replied: "Oh, no." They were each fined $175. Outside court they said they wanted to pay their fine immediately so they could leave Ipswich as soon as possible. |
